Why is Ontario Driving Abstract so important?

Employment

Practically all employers, just to name a few, Uber, Amazon, Purolator, Metrolinx, require driver job applicants to provide their Ontario driver abstracts. Transportation companies, such as taxi and bus operators, trucking companies, delivery companies establish hiring criteria either specifying a maximum number of demerit points a prospective candidate may have on their abstract or requiring them to have a clean abstract.

Insurance

Why is it so important to regularly check your Ontario driving abstract? One of the main reasons is your insurance premiums that are subject to annual change. Based on a variety of factors, such as more than 25 percent at-fault accidents and traffic convictions, your insurance company will annually review and determine new insurance premiums. Your driving record gives you a full picture of traffic convictions going on and off your record, when it happens, and what impact it has in terms of accumulation of demerit points. Hence, your driver record becomes an important tool allowing you to better negotiate insurance premiums at the time of renewal.

Licence Suspension

Another important consideration to regularly check your Ontario driving abstract is the absolute necessity to maintain valid current status of your Ontario driver licence. Driving with suspended licence is strictly prohibited under any circumstances and may result in a fine of $1,000 to $5,000 for a first offence and $2,000 to $5,000 for a subsequent; or court can order you to spend up to six months in jail, or you may have to do both. Amongst a variety of reasons, for which your licence may get suspended, there are simple things that can easily pass unnoticed. For example, if you don't pay a traffic fine when ordered by the court, your licence gets suspended automatically. It may happen because you forgot to do it, or you didn't get a court decision by mail, or changed your mailing address. Another example related to the validity of your licence, being a commercial driver you do not submit the result of medical examination to medical review section on time. As a result, your Class A licence gets downgraded to Class G automatically without any complimentary written notification.
